11 of AMG’s Most Unique Vehicles

AMG

AMG is full of misfits. It’s the German company that enjoys cramming engines of huge power into any car they can get their hands on, and I like that. But as Road & Track recently pointed out, there’s some history to AMG cars that you may not be aware of. Particularly with their involvement with Mitsubishi.

AMG’s legendary ’80s exotic crusher, the Hammer, was a one-off marriage between AMG and Mercedes before the companies became one, but it created a legend and an ethos by which all other AMG products would follow. AMG at the same time also tinkered with the Mistubishi Galant. As strange as it sounds, it’s true, as you can see in the first slide below. They didn’t add any turbos to the Galant’s engine, but they did add a high-flow cylinder head, re-worked pistons for more compression, and they upped the redline to 8,000.

AMG also made a 3.2 litre 6-cylinder version of the 190e. Contrary to what the buzzy 4-cylinder Cosworth version offered, AMG went for more displacement. It’s pretty easy to see where the DNA of the C32 came from.

Other notables from R&D‘s list include the slightly better known G65 V12 behemoth, the lighting fast SL73, and the limited run CLK DTM.
