1965 Merc 600 Pullman Popemobile in America for the First Time

While the current version of the Popemobile is really designed for safety and functionality, in years past the official ride of the head of the Catholic Church was never short in the style department. Take for example the 1965 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman landaulet Popemobile, which will be on American soil for only the first time ever when it takes part at the 16th Annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in March.

The automaker dusted the vehicle off from its Mercedes-Benz Museum and shipped it Stateside especially for the Concours event, which will be held from March 11 through 13, with celebrations and showcases held at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, Florida and at the Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach.

The iconic and unique vehicle features air-ride suspension, heating, air-conditioning and power brakes. Of course, to protect its all-important passenger, the car is also fitted with bullet-proof glass. It also sports a rear set that can be elevated for when the pope is to be seen by assembled crowds or for processions. It was used by a total of three different popes before being retired back to the Stuttgart headquarters of Mercedes-Benz back in 1985.
