The 2017 E-Class is Going to Be Super Luxurious

In the last few years, the E-Class’s market share has dropped significantly. Competition in the premium sedan segment has increased sharply, and Mercedes has let its car rest on its laurels a bit too much. That’s meant lower sales for it relative to those of the rivals in its class.

Mercedes is currently working on fixing that problem. It all starts with Modular Rear Architecture. MRA will be the chassis designation for both the C-Class and 2017 E-Class. (Our writer Derek did a great job explaining the new underpinnings, here.) The MRA platform is meant to help reinvent the E-Class. It will provide more room, a wider track, and greater adaptability to existing technology, such as that found in the new S-Class.

That bump in width and tech will give the E-Class a much greater feeling of luxury than that offered by the current car. Hopefully, that will help the three-pointed star’s mid-size sedan regain its dominance over its competitors.

The next E-Class will be available with the new 4.0L twin-turbocharged engine found in both the AMG GT and C63. The power plant will come in different states of tune, depending on which box you tick.

We’ve been catching glimpses of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class for quite some time now, so you’d probably expect that we’re going to see it in the flesh soon. However, that cannot be further from the truth. According to recent rumors, we’re not likely to see a concept or, rather, a production-ready concept version of it before 2016.

Having tested the current E63 earlier this year, I must say that I think making the E-Class more luxurious and faster is a tall order to fill.
