2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 Sedan – This is it

2018

There was a time in automotive history when throwing around quotes like, “the most powerful,” or “the fastest” vehicle ever were special. Unfortunately that’s no longer true, as we’ve grown to expect every generation model to be that much better than its predecessor—specially a Mercedes-Benz.

Such is the case of the just-announced AMG E63 and E63 S sedan. Not only is it the most powerful E-Class of all time, but it also sets a new benchmark in its segment by; to put it in simple terms; being a mother-loving beast of a car. After all, blistering 0-60 mph times in the 3 second range were reserved for AMG-powered hypercars like the Pagani Huayra not too long ago.

Starting with the most powerful and capable of the two, the AMG E63 S takes things to a whole new level with 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, emanating from a hand-built 4.0 liter V8 biturbo motor from Affalterbach. The ultra-sleek AMG Speedshift multi-clutch nine-speed transmission, combined with the company’s first launch-control system called “Racestart,” promise to propel the E63 S from a stand still to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds.

The lesser of the power couple is the E63, which is powered by the same powerplant, though detuned to produce only 563 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque at a ridiculously low 2,250 rpm. Unlike its pricier counterpart, the E63 is limited to a 155 mph top speed instead of the S’s 186 mph. It’s also worth mentioning that both units feature cylinder deactivation for lower fuel consumption and emission values, which are more and more important given strict governmental emission laws across the globe.

The elephant in the room? Both 2018 E63 variants are exclusively available as 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive models, which leads us to believe that forever-long AMG burnouts and donuts are a thing of the past. Depending on which kind of AMG owner you are (or want to be), this may be rather saddening, though don’t be too sad, because an E63 S “Edition 1” will also be available at the time of launch. It will feature a flashier Designo Night Black Magno paint finish, body stripes, and 20-inch matte black wheels.

While we truly find the 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 Sedan to look rather muscular and gorgeous on these photographs, it won’t be until the upcoming 2016 Los Angeles International Auto Show that we’ll get a proper up-close look at this German monster.
