What is it about racing that inspires drivers to go all out on the track? Is it the hunger for victory? Or perhaps the fame and glory? Whatever it is, there’s got to be someone on the sidelines ready to pounce, just in case a driver goes too wild or something goes wrong mechanically.

For this year’s DTM racing series, that role is bestowed upon the
2011 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Safety Car. If you know your motorsports, it
won’t be any surprise to you that despite all the hardwork and
inspiration put into the base sedan by AMG, it’ll take a lot more to be
able to oversee safety on the racing track. That’s why the safety car
you see in the video (below) has a lot more under its panels than the production
version.

The 2011 safety car has been fitted with an adjustable coilover
suspension system plus a high-performance braking system in order to
allow it to breeze through the curves of any DTM racing event during the
season. Again, if you’re a motorsports fan, you’ll know that each and
every track requires different suspension settings in order to maximize
traction at the highest possible speeds, hence the need for adjustable
coilovers.

Oh yes, don’t forget the engine. AMG slapped a performance package
onto the naturally-aspirated 6.3-liter V8 thus taking its performance
rating to 480hp and 600Nm. It can accelerate up to 100 kph is just 4.3
seconds, so it shouldn’t have much trouble taking over the race as lead,
err, safety car.
