How Does the AMG C63 S Compare to the 911 Carrera S, the BMW M2, and the Audi R8?

In the sports-car showdown below, hosted by Australian website Drive, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe squared off against a collection of high-performance vehicles to determine the Best Performance Car over $60,000. With stiff competition from an Audi R8, a BMW M2, and a Porsche 911 Carrera S, the C63 S Coupe didn’t quite finish at the top of the pack. But with these cars all being so different from each other, it is hard to compare them straight up.

While the Audi R8 received praise for its genuine supercar makeup, powerful mid-mounted V10 engine, and extremely smooth handling, the massive price tag of $450,000 AUD ($325,000 USD) is a turnoff for most buyers, and placed this car squarely in fourth place.

Although the Mercedes C63 S Coupe was ranked third, it is the type of car that serious driving enthusiasts would mostly appreciate. Its huge twin-turbo V8 dishes out plenty of power, and by turning off the Electronic Stability Program, this car reacts just as you want it to, free of the computerized, safety-enhancing traction control that can take the fun out of driving. Here, each stomp of the gas and turn of the wheel creates a true expression of the driver’s skill.

The BMW M2 came into this matchup a bit under-gunned, as it was the cheapest and least powerful of the bunch. But what this car lacked on paper, it more than made up for on the road, just narrowly missing out on the top spot. This car is all about pleasure driving; from the open road to the race track, this M2 is sure to put a smile on any driver’s face.

Oh well, Porsche wins again. But it’s always fun to compete, right?
