Another Wreck, Another Head Scratcher — Would You Rebuild?

Restoring an old SL? That might be reasonable. Restoring Europe’s favorite taxi? Probably not.

“It’ll be a fun little project for me,” says MB World member Truu_Ston3r, while proudly announcing on our forum that this wreck will be rebuilt. He’s decided — against all odds and, perhaps, even against common sense — to rebuild it.

Now I’ll admit: I’m an enthusiast, and I’d do quite a lot of things to keep my CLK55 in road-worthy condition. But if it got wrecked to this degree, I’d have no problem saying “thanks for saving my bones, you trusty Benz” and start searching for another AMG before it gets recycled into a next life as a wire coat hanger.

The fact that it may be time to give up is made even more glaring by the fact that we’ve covered this topic before, specifically with a now-infamous W221. But that one had a fraction of the damage as this one. Even if the car is special to you, it sometimes doesn’t make sense to re-build. It’ll never be right. Never. The tolerances by which Mercedes makes these cars are not going to be replicated in a DIY project. Even so, we wish Truu_Ston3r well. And, of course, we’ll be keeping an eye on this one to see if his patience runs out.
