Arctic Cool: CLA45 AMG Preview
You know, I’m alright with this new “wel’ll-release-our-own-damn-spy-shots” thing from Mercedes. It gives us a pretty good look at their upcoming models without giving it all away. Of course, that excitement is doubled when it’s a car like the CLA45 AMG.

Think of this car as amends for the A-Class AMG not making it’s way to the states. I know, we’re still not getting a fast hot hatch, but the CLA is essentially the same car underneath. They’re both built on the same platform, for instance. They both will have a turbocharged four cylinder engine, and they’ll both be making around 350hp. So far the only real differences between the two are the body style and the fact that the CLA45 has kick-ass arctic camo while the A45 does not. USA: 1  EU: 0

Most importantly (yes, even more important than looks) is the fact that it’ll be all-wheel drive. Now, there’s been some static out there on the net about the US not getting any AWD models because of whatever reasons people on the internet come up with. Along side these photos, there’re a few diagrams that leaked as well. This one in particular should help clear things up.

Being a primarily front-wheel drive platform, the engine is mounted transversely. “Oh no!” cries the chorus of MB fan boys. “This means it’s going to be one of those crappy front-wheel biased AWD cars!” You’re kinda right. This system doesn’t have a transfer case or proper center differential. In the regular CLA, it’ll be biased towards boring-wheel-drive. However. The AMG model will have additional torque directed to the rear wheels.

One major advantage of this is the fact that it’s really light. Much lighter than the full fat drive train the the 4matic C-Class and up. Ideally, it’d be a 40/60 setup, but we probably won’t get more specific details until later. The car is set to make it’s real debut at the Detroit International Auto Show next month. Fans of small fast cars should keep an eye out for this one.
