“The E250 also serves as a replacement for the lovable, V6-powered E350 Bluetec.”

Yup, you read that right.

The big sedan with its little 2.1 Turbo-Diesel power plant is currently set to replace the highly touted V6 turbo diesel option of the E Series. As the editors of Autoblog point out in their quick spin article, the lack of a V6 diesel power plant could hurt the German automaker as its rivals continue to offer higher performing models (BMW’s 535d and Audi A6 TDI).

But Mercedes doesn’t see it that way.

In the US, we tend to forget that the German luxury leader’s been supplying big cars with little engines to the European market for quite some time. And as the North American market is slowly starting to demand more diesel options, MB’s now decided to ship over one of its most fuel efficient versions of the big E class sedan.

As we see in Autoblog’s test of the E250 4-matic, the case for this car isn’t particularly strong. It’s a more than capable engine for getting around town in a comfortable, luxurious manner, and the fuel economy it provides is great for the class, but with a fully loaded as tested price of $64,295, will the little 2.1 liter turbo-diesel be enough this aggressive price segment?
