Since it was born, this 1955 Mercedes-Benz Unimog S 404 has averaged about 61 miles per year. That’s because it’s been slowly and carefully creeping its way into your heart all the way from Germany, where others like it cemented the Unimog as one of the most important and most capable 4x4s and military vehicles ever built.

This particular Unimog is special, though, and not just because it only has 15,000 miles. It’s serial No. 4 of reportedly 1,210 produced in this series that year. Which makes it one of the earliest known examples on the planet, and it’s selling price is surprisingly reasonable.

Found on (strangely enough) VisionFilmWorks.com, No. 4 can be yours for $28,000, and that’s with assisted delivery. That’s for the people who love it for what it is. If somebody is looking for the history, but wants to make sure it’ll still be nice enough to drive and ready to off-road, you can also have the company do a full professional off-frame restoration. And it even includes a documentary of the process. That, however, will cost you $140,000. Yeah, just a litttttle bit more.

Mechanically, the Unimog is as it was when it came off the line. It uses the 80-horsepower 2.2-liter straight-6 M180 engine, and that’s linked to a manual 6-speed transmission. It weighs about 5,500 pounds, has front and rear locking differentials, 4×4 (of course), and coil suspension. The approach and departure angles are 45 degrees front and rear, and it has 17 inches of ground clearance.

There’s only one thing left to tell you: BUY IT!
