There is no one way to make a sports car. Some like all-wheel drive, some like rear-wheel. Some like front-engined, some like rear-engined, and others like mid-engined. Some like German, others like… German. Drive test driver Stephen Ottley recently took a Porsche 911 GT3 (the benchmark), a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S, and an Audi R8 LMX and was able to fine-tune his taste buds to see what fit his preferences and performed the best.

The video below highlights the newest kid on the block, the AMG GT S, much ballyhooed as a legitimate 911-fighter (that rear shape certainly didn’t suggest it was trying to be otherwise). Its magnificently long nose houses a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 that replaces the old 6.3-liter V8 from the SLS. The GT S puts out 510 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque and is offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

So what did Ottley think? Well, he notes how surprised he was at how great the engine sounds. He specifies that he loves the “mid-range punch” from the turbos, and remarks how direct the steering is. It also looks absolutely stunning, inside and out. But is that enough to take the crown? I’ll let Ottley sort that out for you.
