Car2go, a car sharing company owned by Daimler, is launching additional U.S. operations before the end of the year. Already operating in Europe and Vancouver, Canada, Car2go will be made available in San Diego, which is positioning itself as the U.S.’s EV capital.

The service will make available 300 electric Smart cars after an
apparently successful pilot program in Austin, which used conventional
gasoline-engined smart cars. Equipped with solar roofs and plug-in
capability, the Smart electric cars can go up to 84 miles per charge.
Recharging won’t be a problem since 1,000 Blink electric vehicle
charging stations will also be rolled out by the end of the year.

Car2go allows its members to spontaneously rent cars without fixed
pick-up or return points. Charges are on a per kilometer basis and a
customer can return the car at any time and in any designated locations
which are scattered throughout the operating area. Worldwide, the
program is a huge success and already has 40,000 members.
