For the past few months, we’ve been telling you that Mercedes is planning to not just revive the Maybach nameplate with the S-Class, but to also bring a Maybach SUV into the fold. Since details have been thin on the latter, new rumors have emerged that we just have to tell you about.

2016 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class

Right now, Mercedes is eyeing the GLS-Class SUV as the platform that will carry the Maybach moniker, but that’s something we’ve known for a while now. However, what wasn’t known was which of the new Mercedes engines the Maybach SUV might get.

Most pointed to a rather upgraded twin-turbocharged V8 that would produce around 500 horsepower. However a new rumor from TopSpeed states that Mercedes could ditch the V8 for a twin-turbo V12 that would make over 600 horsepower. Which might sound ridiculous, but seeing as it has to lug around quite a bit of weight, it’s not that crazy.

More Details on Possible Maybach SUV

While Mercedes remains mum about the new Maybach SUV, the 600 horsepower twin-turbocharged V12 makes a lot of sense. Especially when you consider the S600 moniker on the new Maybach S-Class. Essentially, it would keep a Maybach naming convention that would denote a much higher luxury car experience.

We’re eager to find out more about the new Maybach SUV, and should know more soon as the Auto Show season ramps up.
