This is one of the best cars that you can buy, period.”

Bold words from James Riswick of Edmunds to make as he provides a quick drive breakdown of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan.

In his review, James covers tech-features, a breakdown of the different engine options, and the driving dynamics of the beloved mid-size German luxo-sedan.

His review is certainly glowing, as the E-Class has undergone its most significant styling and tech upgrades to date for this model year, but in a fast growing mid-size segment that cross promotes the inclusion of sleeker, sexier, 4-door “coupes” – one has to wonder if MB’s bread and better luxury sedan is up to the challenge.

The styling is described as more ‘feminine, less monolithic’ – specifically to indicate the usage of smoother flowing lines. Specifically, the signature chrome grille of MB’s corporate face has been replaced with a softer shape, fitted with a prominently sized  version of the tri-star badge, and stronger emphasized headlights.

In addition, the signature hard lines of the side and rear haunches have been smoothed out.

It’s an updated look, but to me, amorphous, especially when you’re compared to the increasingly bold styling from Audi, BMW, and of course Lexus’ origami styling with the GS.

It certainly feels Mercedes-Benz is moving towards targeting different demographic while trying to reconcile the look of their line. Ultimately, sales numbers will tell the tale.
