The term SUV can be interpreted in a large variety of ways. It’s supposed to be a Sport Utility Vehicle, but depending on how the manufacturer weighs those three words, and what they find to be most important, the final result can be vastly different. Motor Trend‘s most recent episode of “Head 2 Head” shows as much by putting a 1973 Icon FJ44 next to a Mercedes-AMG G65. Both are technically SUVs, but just how different are they?

The stats run like this: the FJ44 runs on a 540-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8 with 495 lb-ft. It uses a four-speed automatic, it weighs 4,745 pounds, and it costs $222,000. The G65 has a 621-horsepower, 6.0-liter V12 with 738 lb-ft of torque. It runs with a seven-speed automatic, weighs 5,913 pounds, and it costs $221,926 as tested.

Other than that, they’re both boxes, they both have brush guards, and they both have wheels. That’s maybe it. Let Jonny Lieberman and Jason Cammisa explain it.
