I Fell in Love With a Sprinter Van, aka the Mercedes Mullet

2015 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (11)

In this line of work, you sometimes find yourself holding the keys to an unexpected automobile, staring blankly at it, wondering how in the hell you got picked for this particular machine. This is an exact reenactment of me a few weeks ago when my press fleet pulled into the driveway with a Mercedes-Benz 2500 Sprinter passenger van.

If it was a cargo edition, I could haul slabs of drywall or a couple motorcycles; if it was the AWD version, I could make a great video blasting through some fields and old fire trails. But this was neither of those things. This was a simple base van with seating for 11 of my closest family and friends, and RWD. The only upgrade I had was the larger V6 diesel engine.

But then it hit me.

Despite the plastic floors, clipboard storage, and other practical features, this barge doesn’t have to be a work machine. I can also be a be a party bus. So I loaded up some friends, charged onward into the mountains of East Tennessee, and spent a day on a whirlwind moonshine tasting adventure.

As you can see in the video below, in the process, I learned that the Germans do actually have a sense of humor, they created the automotive equivalent of a mullet — business up front, party in the back — and that somehow I need to own an AWD Sprinter Van for even greater shenanigans.
