Maybach GL Coming Soon?
In a weird turn of events, Mercedes is rumored to be mulling over the idea of bringing the Maybach title not only to the S-Class, but also to one of it SUVs.
For those that don’t know the storied, and sometimes terrible history of the Mercedes Maybach nameplate, it’s essentially Mercedes out luxurying everyone else on the market. It’s a nameplate that is synonymous with the rich and powerful. Those that demand the finest of everything, and don’t care how much they have to spend to get it.
That being said, when Mercedes reintroduced the Maybach some years ago, the nameplate fell hard on its face, and Mercedes quietly brushed it under the rug. Now, however, Mercedes has brought back the moniker to achieve a level of luxury that surpasses the normal S-Class, but keeps the bones of the car intact.
I sat in the new Maybach at the LA Auto Show and it feels like you’re sitting on a cloud of puppies. It’s epically baller.
So it’s understandable why Mercedes now wants to bring that level of luxury to its SUV lineup and create a GL-Class Maybach.
I can’t say that it isn’t a good idea, because if we’ve learned anything from the G-Class lineup of SUVs, it’s that people will pay whatever Mercedes asks for more luxury. Although nothing has been confirmed as of yet, speaking at the Detroit auto show, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, the Mercedes boss, said that the SUV was “most likely,” happening.
I’m curious though, what do you all think, will this be a slam dunk for Mercedes? Or will it become just like the last time they introduced the Maybach nameplate?
