Mercedes-Benz has seemingly always been at the forefront of future technologies, design, and build. When MB released their fourth generation SL-Class in 1989 at the Geneva International Auto Show, code named R129, it was one of the most sophisticated vehicles on the market. New computer-age features in luxury, electronic technology, and safety brought together a very special grand touring soft-top convertible. For its age, the SL-Class has a lasting appeal, mostly because of its looks and driving character. With that in mind, we invite you to enjoy the R129 mega gallery below.

Delivering an insulated comfortable drive while providing accurate controls was certainly state of the art for the R129. Handling is by advanced five-link independent rear suspension and strut-type up front. Adding the optional electronically controlled damping system was unusual, but it offered world-class handling. The electronic dampers weren’t the only marvel on this Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. Mercedes also added ABS and other safety features like a hidden automatic pop-out rollover-bar. Small luxuries of today were huge over 20 years ago, like automatic climate control, tilt and telescoping wheel, full-power driver’s seat, magnesium-backed driver’s seat, and optical cable for the audio system routing concert-esque sound in-cabin.

Throughout the gallery below you’ll find mostly three models of the SL-Class R129, which were released through the years of production: the SL320, SL500, and the SL600. Only a couple rare AMG and limited release models were added, like the SL60 AMG. I personally imagine that post-facelift SL500s would be the best investment right now, for they are the most common.

Looking to make your next or first purchase of a used SL-Class R129? This is a great time to do so. In my experience watching the used car industry, the R129 has bottomed-out for its depreciation today and is likely on the upswing. Values will stay near the bottom for the next five to ten years until supply runs out, and soon you’ll have a collector. That means at this time you can still find a low-mileage, well-taken care of, single-owner R129 listed now or listing soon.

To give you a little inspiration to get shopping, here are a few happy owners and their SL-Class R129s from around the globe who have treated us to glimpse or two on MBWorld‘s R129 Official Picture Thread.
