The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT Gets More Models, More Power, More Technology, and More Awesome

In case you missed the news, Mercedes-AMG is turning 50 this year. And they’re doing a bunch of cool stuff to celebrate. One of those cool things is adding a huge pile of upgrades to the AMG GT.

First we get the new model to the family, the GT C Coupe. A tin-top version of the GT C Roadster, the C models slot in above the S, but below the R in terms of power and performance. Notable improvements include a more-powerful engine, wider rear fenders, active rear steering, and AMG ride control, borrowed from the GT R. It will launch exclusively as a new “Edition 50” model to start with.

Moving on to rest of the GT range, Mercedes finds a way to improve every single model in some way. The standard GT and S models both see power increases to their 4.0L V8s. The normal GT gets 13 more ponies and 22 more lb-ft of torque, totaling 469 hp and 465 lb-ft. The GT S now produces 515 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque, a boost of 12 hp and 15 lb-ft.

Visually, every AMG GT models is getting a new bumper with the AMG Panamerican grille featured on the GT3 racer. With 15 vertical chrome strakes, it adds a touch of history and elegance. Also making its way to every model is AIRPANEL aerodynamics wizardry from the GT R. If you are unfamiliar, this system adds electronically controlled flaps to the nose of the car. That allows for precise manipulation of drag and cooling, for better road fuel economy, and greater track cooling.

Furthermore, AMG’s Interior Night package, once exclusive to the GT R, is now available on all models. There is a new Exterior Carbon package for GT C models. And Mercedes found a way to stuff ventilation into the AMG Performance seats as an option. There are also new wheel designs. And new Napa leather trim options for GT and GT S cars.

The Mercedes-AMG GT may already be the best sports car on the market today, but that sure didn’t stop those crazy Germans from making it even better.
