It’s clear that Mercedes-Benz is shooting to keep the Mercedes-AMG GT top of mind when it comes to high performance.

In one of the latest moves aimed at garnering more exposure for the sports car, MB has announced that the AMG GT3 will compete in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship.

The new race car, to be based on the AMG GT S, will be Mercedes’ first big segue into American endurance racing. To date, Mercedes’ participation in American endurance racing has been limited to the Pirelli World Challenge’s American events with the SLS AMG GT3.

According to AutoBlog, the initial plan calls for the development of three Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars to compete in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship in 2017. Two of the cars will compete under the Riley Motorsports banner. The third AMG GT3, a customer car, will be fielded by SunEnergy1 Racing.

We certainly will be keeping a close eye on the results.
