New Über-Merc Is a Formula-1-Inspired Widebody Hypercar That Takes Things to a Whole New Level

Rumors of Mercedes-AMG developing a new hypercar have been flying for months. While they are keeping pretty tight-lipped about the situation, the car (potentially named EQ R50) is going to be next-level.

The new hypercar should take on the likes of the Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyder, and McLaren P1. With Formula-1-derived hybrid technology and advanced lightweight concepts, AMG hopes to bring this hybrid hypercar to market sometime before 2020. The car, first teased at last year’s Paris show, is expected to make a full 3D appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show next September. In the meantime, the image above popped up during a Mercedes presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that just took place in Las Vegas.

We expect Mercedes to build between 200 and 300 of these nutty, next-level cars. With a small-displacement turbocharged V6 and hybrid electric propulsion assistance, everyone is expecting at least 1000 horsepower. And it should weigh around one kilogram per horsepower for the “perfect ratio.”

If you want to get your hands on one of these super AMGs, you’d better start lobbying now. Demand is guaranteed to outstrip supply. With an expected price tag of about 2.4 million euro, you’d also better start saving your pennies. According to MotorTrend, this ludicrously-expensive, ridiculously-fast hypercar will potentially be at the pinnacle of Mercedes’ new EQ sub-brand of electric-powered cars, which will carry Mercedes-Benz, AMG, and EQ badging.

It would seem that Mercedes is aiming to go toe-to-toe with Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing’s insane AM-RB 001 collaboration. That’s expected to drop in 2018 at a similar price tag, though leveraging a lighter-weight non-hybrid platform to compensate for the lack of ultimate power. In a competition like this, we the automotive enthusiasts win.
