50th Anniversary of AMG Performance Division Highlighted at Detroit Show

There certainly wasn’t a shortage on news from Mercedes-Benz at the 2017 North American International Auto Show.

In addition to displaying the buzzy all-electric Generation EQ Concept, Mercedes-Benz also showcased the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45, the E 400 4Matic Coupe, the AMG GT C Edition 50, and the new Maybach S 650 Cabriolet.

The star of the Mercedes display? Well, that’s probably a matter of personal opinion. But if we were to base it on the MB vehicle that seemed to draw the most attention at the show? Well, that’d probably be a toss-up between the new Cabriolet Maybach and the E-Class Coupe, which is making its world debut.

That said, the most-coveted car would probably be the highly-exclusive AMG GT C. It will be limited to 50 units, and is also making its world premiere at the show, in honor of the 50th anniversary of AMG.

MB also devoted a lot of their Detroit space to showcasing its hybrid plug-in vehicles. But the new GLA might be one of the most important displays for MB at the show, considering it’s directly aimed at the youth market. A market that will prove vital to the future of the brand.

“The compact models have won us a large number of new customers,” says Dietmar Exler, President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. “The new GLA will draw even more SUV fans to Mercedes because it offers even greater comfort and functionality – and a fresh, more distinctive look that emphasizes its off-road capabilities.”

One thing’s for certain, the new GLA isn’t short on distinctive looks. Of course, we’ll have to wait for a little wheel time in the SUV to weigh in on its off-road capabilities.
