Mercedes-Benz 500 SL Rallye: What Dreams are Made of

Mercedes SL Rally (1)

There is something extra special about seeing a classic car being used and abused. It gets my jimmies all rustled in a good way. It’s for that very reason that one of my favorite Mercedes in the world is the 500 SL Rallye. Back in the day it was a modern rally machine with a big 5.0-liter V8, and hot shoe Walter Rorhl behind the wheel, but today it is a look back at the wild and exciting racing history of Mercedes-Benz in the sexiest package imaginable. Sadly, due to a funding issue, the program was killed before any of the SL cars could see competition in the WRC, but there were four prototype racers built for testing.

One of these incredible cars was at the Amelia Island show earlier this year, and the cool kids over at Hemmings wrote up a great piece highlighting the rise and fall of this racer. When you get done looking at all the cool photos we have collected here for you, and you watch the sweet video below that Mercedes made, why don’t you go check out their piece as well? You can never learn enough about one of the coolest rally cars ever made.
