Sounds like Mercedes-Benz has something big up their sleeve.

According to Left Lane News, the brand is considering the idea of creating an environmental-friendly sub-brand. Although the company isn’t offering any specific details on the plan, rumor has it Mercedes is putting what’s said to be “tremendous” resources into electric and hybrid powered cars.

Apparently, the strategy is targeted at taking direct aim at BMW and will include two battery-powered models of the new smart fortwo and an updated B250e by the end of 2016. Mercedes is also said to be developing a hydrogen-powered GLC that could debut as early as next year. All and all, the carmaker is expected to have at least ten new plug-in hybrid models by the close of 2016.

The long-term strategy includes plans to launch a long range EV to compete against Tesla as well.

We’ll certainly be following along closely, but at first glance, the idea seems like a winner. Don’t you think?
