Noting its success in Formula 1, Mercedes-Benz and AMG are now apparently looking to conquer another segment: the hypercar. Reported to be named the R50, in homage to AMG’s 50th anniversary, the new hypercar will be Mercedes’ first foray into the segment since the very rare CLK-GTR. Much like the Aston Martin RB001, Mercedes will employ most of AMG’s Formula 1 engineering talents to develop the car.

Former R&D big wig Thomas Weber confirmed the news during a preview to the new Mercedes-AMG lineup at the Paris Auto Show. Showing a silhouette that is very similar to current prototype endurance racers, it will employ hybrid technology. Unlike the V12 in the Aston Martin, the Mercedes is going to see a variation of the current turbo V6 in the Formula 1 car. To make it viable for the road, it’ll have a larger displacement, two turbos instead of one, and also added cooling for the average commute. Details are of course still very obscure, but it is reported that Lotus will work their magic on the suspension. Furthermore, AMG is aiming for a one to one HP:kilogram ratio.
