If a major manufacturer modernized their own classic car, does that really count as a restomod? Or is that just a new version of the old car? Whatever you want to call it, Mercedes did it to eleven 300 SLs. They’re the only gullwings in the world with modern components put together by AMG, which in turn, makes them exceedingly rare and expensive. They originally went for $1.39 million each.

For all that money, you did get a very special car. The original straight six? Too slow. Instead they dropped in a 6-liter 380 horsepower V8. It also has power steering, a four-speed automatic, napa leather and alacantra trim, and modernized gauges. Most critically, they dumped the ancient swing-arm suspension setup for a modern five-link. If that doesn’t sound like a fun car to drive, then I don’t know what fun is. I, however, will not be among those bidding because I, like most people, don’t have millions of dollars lying around. The last one of these that went to auction sold for $767,460.

What a steal. It’ll officially cross the block at the Monaco RM Auction this May 10th.
