This should rub BMW fans the wrong way.

Mercedes-Benz has not only extended its sales lead over BMW, but the carmaker did it in pretty amazing fashion.

All in all, Mercedes’ sales numbers increased almost twice as much as its longtime luxury competitor in the first nine months of 2016, to the tune of 57,985 cars sold, according to a Bloomberg report. In fact, at the current pace, Mercedes is on track to achieve by year-end a goal they set for 2020: dethroning BMW as the king of premium vehicle sales.

That in itself is worth Mercedes popping out the bubbly, considering that the carmaker hasn’t held the top sales post since 2005.

The surge in Mercedes sales numbers is being credited to a spike in the number of SUV vehicles sold, as well as the carmaker’s appeal with younger buyers with vehicles like the GLC coupe and compact GLA sport utility vehicle.
