Mercedes Autonomous CES

Mercedes Uses CES to Display Latest Advances in Safety and Navigation Systems.

The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES for short, is a gathering of the tech industry to show off the latest gadgets available to the public. Mercedes was just there to showcase new autonomous driving tech, which they have put into a prototype E-Class.

Mercedes use of GPS technology makes their system of autonomous driving just a bit different from others. Instead of just using autonomous technology to prevent accidents, the GPS unit can work with other controls of the car.

Twin cameras assist Drive Pilot, the name which Mercedes will use for their autonomous tech. It differs from other systems because it uses GPS and map data to also include turns, rather than just following the road. However, Level 2 technology dictates that you can’t just fall asleep and allow the car to bring you to your destination. There are still alerts and reminders so that you pay attention and keep your hands on the wheel.

No system has reached a perfect level yet, so there’s still some gaps to fill, in terms of a completely hands-free driving experience. Even the host in the video below has to intervene and take control of the car when a turn isn’t recognized by the GPS system. Progress may be rapid in this area, but there are a lot of quirks to work out before releasing it to the public.
