Mercedes Shows Us the 2015 C-Class Wagon

There once was a time when just about every automaker had a station wagon or two that they made. I’ve got some extremely fond memories of cross-country trips in a couple of them: mostly mom’s Malibu Wagon. Sadly, or not, those days are almost gone. Mercedes is one of the few automakers doing business in the U.S. these days that still has one: the E-Class. With this revitalized and restyled 2015 MB C-Class, Mercedes has two, but, apparently this one won’t be immediately available in the U.S.

This is pretty sad because, thanks to long-roof cars from the likes of Audi (Audi Allroad), BMW (3-Series wagon) and the Volvo V60, station wagons appear to be making a strong comeback. This one, which Mercedes calls the C-Class Estate in Europe where it will be available, will see its little short-roofed C-Class brothers, sedans all, sold in the U.S., but it will have to wave goodbye to them at the docks. We in the U.S. will see some pretty cool versions of the C-Class though. More on those in a later article.

An Almost Complete Redesign for 2015

Like the C-Class sedans, C-Class Estate is quite a bit bigger than previous versions. This is because Stuttgart plans on introducing an entry-level CLA-Class which will be smaller, and will fit right below these in the overall lineup. The new C-Class, both wagon and sedan, will feature more luxurious interior styling that takes more cues from the flagship sedan S-Class. It’s also going to have a new COMAND touchpad for controlling the infotainment system.

Highlighting the practicality factor will be a 40/20/40 split rear seat. This arrangement will make for configuring the cargo compartment for hauling cargo and passengers. All three seatbacks will also fold flat for a flat load floor arrangement.

An Impressive Array of Available Engines

Those lucky Europeans will have several engines, both gasoline and diesel to choose from, when the car becomes ready for sale. These engines will produce anywhere from 115 horses on up to 333 horsepower. There’s also going to be a C300 BlueTec diesel-electric hybrid that will achieve 61 mpge (Miles per gallon equivalent). Wouldn’t that be nice to have with the price of gas today?
