Mercedes-Benz is going to share the turbocharged V6 that debuted in the redesigned C-Class and ML-Class cars. This action will create a new entry-level version of the convertible hardtop. The SL400 will join other SL-class models like the SL550, SL63 AMG and the SL65 AMG. Chances are the SL400 will cost significantly less than the $107,000 SL550.

Check Out the Specs

In the SL400, what we’ll be seeing is a 3.oL V6 that is twin-turbocharged and puts out 329 horses and 354 foot-pounds of torque. With numbers like that, the SL400 isn’t going to be a track burner, but it’ll get up and boogie well enough. Published 0-60 times are only slightly more than half a second slower than the 429-hp SL550. Backing up the V6 will be a seven-speed automatic transmission that helps the 2015 SL400 get an estimated 20 MPG city and 27 highway.

Mercedes is putting a number of its eggs in this twin-turbo V6 basket. Not only will the aforementioned C-Class and ML-Class vehicles come equipped with it, but the C400 4MATIC and ML400 4MATIC will also have it. We can also expect to see it in the E-Class in the not-too-distant future. One historical note: this is the first time since 1998 (the year Mercedes dropped its inline-six engines from the SL lineup) that the U.S. has seen an SL roadster with a six-cylinder engine.
