Even though car companies aren’t completely abandoning the idea of diesel engines amid some of the recent fiascoes in the industry, Mercedes-Benz seems pretty clear that it won’t be using the technology in at least one aspect of its business: the high-performance AMG models.

“People always ask if we are doing a high performance diesel,” Mercedes-AMG chief executive Tobias Moers recently told Business Insider. “My answer is absolutely no.”

Instead, Moers is banking on gasoline-electric hybrids or pure electric powertrains in the push to develop better higher-performance variants in the future. Which is interesting, considering that in some European markets, diesel reportedly accounts for 70-80 percent of Mercedes cars sold.

However, Moers contends that electrification and hybrid petrol engines give Mercedes a broader reach. Which certainly make sense, given all the heat that diesel technology has been taking recently.
