Spa Francorchamps rarely disappoints.

The high-speed, low-downforce circuit in the Ardennes forest of Belgium had  the most exhilarating qualifying session of the season. The final man to record a time in the session wound up being the quickest. That man was Lewis Hamilton.

Q3 began with a rain shower. All drivers began the session on slicks. All drivers except Force India’s Paul di Resta.

Di Rista began the session on the intermediate wet-weather tire. The move initially appeared a gamble but the rain kept falling harder and when di Resta crossed the start finish line after his fist timed lap, the conditions made his time look unbeatable.

Two more laps and still no one had lapped faster than di Resta. The rain however, started to cease. When it stopped, the track quickly turned to dry and Mercedes-Benz’s Nico Rosberg snatched pole position.

Mark Webber crossed the line next, and his last qualifying lap at the legendary circuit  was good for pole.

Webber’s teammate and reigning champion, Sebastian Vettel, was the next man to cross the line, and he took pole from Webber.

But Mercedes Benz’s Lewis Hamilton had the luck to be the last man on track and be the last man to log a timed lap. The track was at its driest and Hamilton took advantage. The Brit in the silver arrow stole the show and claimed the improbable pole position.
