Super Sedan Battle: E63 AMG Versus F10 BMW M5
As far as automotive rivalries go, few cars slug it out harder than the E63 AMG and the BMW M5. For years, these super sedans have battled it out with ever-increasing horsepower and speed. Their ruthless quest has resulted in what we see below. The E63 AMG and F10 BMW M5. Both have a V8 engine fed by two turbos, both have 4-doors, but really, the similarities end there.
Mercedes’ approach has always been about brute force. Stuff in a big engine, pump out absurd amounts of power and do your best to keep the thing pointed straight. The E63 changes that ethos a little bit with added all-wheel-drive. That doesn’t stop it from being fun, but it does tame the 577 horsepower beast quite a bit.
The M5 sends power to only two wheels. The BMW’s 560 horsepower is less than the AMG’s, but its acceleration has almost no discernible difference. It is tuned a bit sharper, just having an edge in steering feel and handling. It lends to the motorsport pedigree laced throughout BMW’s M cars and you can sense it in the M5, as well… despite it weighing nearly 4,400 lbs.
Both have adjustable ride, providing comfort when wanted and sporty firmness when requested. They both offer interiors of superb quality, and nearly the same features. So which one wins?
