Why You Should Take Your 300SL to Hjeltness

Jerry Hjeltness’ shop specializes in 300SL restorations, to a level that they’ve almost become synonymous with the legendary Mercedes. Opened in 1984 when the Gullwing was just another collector car, Hjeltness and his team have completed more than 50 complete 300SL restorations. Hjeltness Restorations is now in its second generation, as Jerry’s son Eric has come on board to help prepare the vintage Mercs to an exacting level of perfection.

Before he started restoring them professionally, Jerry had already been involved with SLs for decades. His brother got him hooked in 1957, and Jerry bought his own Gullwing in 1960. That exact car is sitting in his shop right now for some brightening and tuning work before it goes back up for sale. The story of how he got the car, and the ambition that it took to buy one as a youngster, is exceedingly interesting, as highlighted by a recent Petrolicious story.

With decades of experience, and having worked on a large percentage of the U.S.-based 300s, you don’t have to take our word for it; just ask around the SL community, and you’ll likely hear a lot about Jerry and his work. Or just look at these photos, the details are amazing.
