“It’s 61 years old, and it’s a peach.”

It’s the best Mercedes-Benz ever built, and quite possibly the best car ever built. It’s the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, and EVO mag got its hands on one.

The exact car seen in the video below is heading to the auction block at RM Sotheby’s Paris auction on February 3, and is expected to grab more than one million buckeroos.

This one is chassis No. 198.040.5500272. The Sport Light’s inner workings are well known at this point. It has a tubular welded frame, independent suspension, a four-speed trans, and a 3.0-liter OHC straight-six that put out 240 SAE horsepower (215 DIN horsepower). Its 8-second 0-62 time and 161-mph top speed were phenomenal at the time.

Bow down to THE ’50s supercar.
