S-Class Muffler Delete Is a Downright Neck-Breaker

Mufflers virtually have only one job: to muffle noise. But we all know driving is supposed to be more than just getting from point A to point B, right? Part of that fun is making some noise. Mufflers don’t help with that. Toss that thing in the scrap heap!

Muffler “deletes” are steadily becoming more popular, and it’s no longer limited to old beater cars and pickups that don’t look the part.

All it takes to shatter your neighbors’ ears with noise is to remove the muffler and install a piece of straight pipe, whether you’ve machined it yourself or bought it from a manufacturer.

MBWorld user PhazonPhobe took his ’03 Mercedes S600 to the next level by deleting the muffler and posting a video for us all to see (which you can see below). He describes the sound as having a low, fierce grumble when idling and more of a growl at higher RPM. As PhazonPhoe puts it himself, it’s “not too loud to draw attention from cops, but just loud enough to break necks.”

In the post, PhazonPhobe included a before and after video to show off the delete.

Here’s the before:

And here’s the after:

Despite the amazing, deafening tone of the delete, PhazonPhobe claims that you can’t hear a thing inside the car until about 1400 RPM — and even then, the tone is still low. When he’s out cruising the town, he claims not to notice anything until he floors it up to 3500 to 4000 RPM. What he hears then is apparently the engine more than the exhaust, and the turbos eat up most of the noise.

According to other users on the thread, it’s one of the cheapest and easiest mods a car owner can do. Need a little more noise in your life? Follow in PhazonPhobe’s footsteps and give your muffler the boot.
