This “AMG Ferrari” Kit Car Is Actually Impressive

AMG Ferrari 3

If a kit car looks like the real thing, and goes as fast as the real thing, is it impervious to criticism? This AMG Ferrari, which is a Ferrari California based on an SL55 AMG, is one of those weird combinations that you shouldn’t like, but it works. Like chicken nuggets in a Frosty. I might make some scornful faces when I say this, but I actually really like it.

From the looks of things, all proportions are correct, unlike the kits based on a Fiero. Even the details are impressive — they even went to the length of changing the AMG sills to “California.” With AMG speed, it’s not like you’ll be embarrassed to have some fun with the throttle, either. To the outside observer, the only difference would be the exhaust tone. Sure you’ll have a deep rumble rather than a sharp bark, but isn’t that worth the money you’ll save?

This one here was priced at about $42,000 USD on eBay, which for an SL55 is a pretty good deal anyway. Right?
