This Is Not How We Would Use an Aged 450 SLC

What kind of stuff do you create if you’re a part of Autoblog‘s online content think tank? Apparently this brilliant idea: find an old Benz (a 450 SLC in this case) and drop it on some stuff. With a drop distance of 120 feet, the impact would pretty much destroy most any car, save for maybe a Toyota pickup. But what if you dropped it on some nice soft mattresses? Enter round 1.

As you can see in the vid below, the first drop on some mattresses was a bit amusing. The car landed nearly square on them, and all of the 450 SLC’s mass quickly compacted them as if they were nothing. The coils then had their own revenge, ejecting the Mercedes back up into the air, and eventually on its side. Impressively, there was not too much damage done.

Round 2 was a bit different. Destruction was guaranteed because this time there was nothing soft to land on. Nose-diving into a BMW is a fairly sad way to see an SLC go to the crusher. If you are fond of that wonderful pillar-less coupe body style, let Autoblog know they could have chosen something far more… average. Even in this crash, it did the usual exceeding of expectations that we have come to expect from Mercedes. I would rate that last landing at an Olympic Gold level.
