The Groundbreaking Mercedes-Benz C111 Still Impresses
Nope, this isn’t some crazy DeLorean that someone tried to mask as a Mercedes-Benz. Although, it’s easy to see why one would think that at first glance.
There are certainly a lot of similarities that can be draw between the two cars, at least from a basic design perspective. But this winged Mercedes known as the C111 was light years ahead of the DeLorean, even though the C111 debuted more than a decade earlier.
We’ve zeroed in on three of the main reasons why.
1. The wild 1970 C111-1 prototype, which was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1969, used a three-rotor Wankel rotary engine kicking out 350 horsepower.
2. Even as a ‘70s concept, the C111-11 (the second spin on the Mercedes prototype) was capable of doing 0 – 60 in 4.9 seconds.
3. Nearly five decades later, those wild Gullwing doors featured on the prototype are still a popular draw for the Mercedes brand.
