2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC

With EPA-estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg city/45 mpg highway (27/42 city/highway with 4MATIC) not only is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC the least expensive E-Class to run, but it is also the least-expensive E-Class to buy at $52,325, undercutting the 2014 E350 by $500. Sitting in the E-Class lineup as the entry-level model should make this diesel more popular than last year’s E350 BlueTEC.

The new 195-horsepower 2.1-liter twin-turbo diesel I4 in the E250 BlueTEC is only 15 horsepower shy of last year’s 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. Torque is down 31 pound-feet from last year’s 400 lb-ft to this year’s 369 lb-ft, but most importantly, price is down $800.

Even though the 2014 E-Class diesel is down two cylinders from last year, the car can still scoot. MotorWeek got its E250 BlueTEC 4MATIC to hit 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. Their 1/4-mile numbers were 15.5 seconds at 88 mph … not too shabby.

Find out what MotorWeek thought of the oil-burning, four-cylinder E-Class in the video below.

Fun fact: you can go exactly twice as far (646 miles) on one tank of fuel in the E250 BlueTEC than you can in the E63 AMG S 4MATIC Wagon.
