CPS - "Crankshaft Position Sensor" Discussion Thread

Because of problems with the damper coming off the crankshaft pulley on the 3.2L V6, MB has redesigned the M112 pulley and is offering at a "good discount". Odd how there is no recall, and MB denial "no problem" (until it fails), but THIS one crank pulley is $200-300 less than the rest from MB

112-035-08-00 Balancer updated $95.76
006-990-70-04 bolt $ 4.79

Here's a link to a thread on ShopForum where many people have had the problem

http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforu...threadid=63512

Don't know if the new C320's come with this revised part but it may pay to ask the dealer, at least if your warranty is over or close to it.

You obviously didn't read the whole post.......this pertains only to the pre 2000 model year. From 2000 all V6 's have the revised part.

Exclamation HeLp!!! Car just shut off in middle of road..

as i said, i drove about 2 miles for the first time all day,on my way to NE Philladelphia for a work meeting, i stoped at a red light and before the light turned green i felt my car "stall" out. i put it in D and tried to start it numerous times and it wouldnt stat. i put it in Neutral and tried as well. i didnt want to burn anything out so i put myu hazards on and waiting for my buddy with a tow truck to come get my *** out of the middle of the road. i saw a scruffy guy sitting at a bus stop and asked him if he wanted to help me out so i gave him $20 to help me push it out of the road. he thanked me 10000 times appoligizing for puting his hands all over the car while he pushed, lol. but anyway...i dont know WHATS WRONG??? could it be my MAF also something under the hood that i dont know what it is, that was ticking, (trying to check manual, and search to find out what it is) will post pic of what is making ticking noise. when i finaly got hime i started the car, it fired right up and ran for 15min. till i shut it off, but now im afraid to drive it, i think i need a MAF also, dont know if this could be affecting it or not. sorry for long post....anyone know whats up?????

dude, that sucks! sorry to hear that. has the dealer flashed your ECU yet? my car was shaking and would idle really rough and die at times one weekend and all the dealer did was flash the ecu and it was back to normal.

keep us updated!

I love the wheels btw, your car looks great, albeit on a flatbed.

that happened to me once, but i think my car shutdown due to bad repairs on the rear of the car from an accident i had. i could not get the car started and if it did start, the clicking would come after trying to turn the car on.

I just had my SAM module replaced - my SRS would turn on and shut off randomly - they told me while it was being replace that my car would be unsafe to drive, so I was stuck w/ a Camry for a few days. Perhaps it could be the SAM?

Believe problem could lie in Rear Sam which is hardwired to the fuel pumps ,item shown under hood is purge valve for evap system will not shut car off

ok the purge valve ticking is actually nothing wrong with the car, it's just a poorly designed bracket that transfers the sound of the pump into the cabin. This is an extremely common problem in the W203, I think pretty-much everyone with a W203 built before the problem was fixed has experienced this. Luckily, the solution is just having the bracket replaced with the new one. Some people have even replaced the bracket themselves.

now for the problem with the car shutting off- I had this problem before. Luckily, when it happened I had actually parked it and turned the engine off. I had it towed to the repair shop which was only 1 mile away from where i was, thankfully. Once it got there the car started up just fine. After running diagnostics they found that the cam possition sensor was the problem. Again, a poorly designed harness that was prone to allowing corrostion of the sensor was to blame. When the sensor would generate errors the engine would be immediately shut off to prevent damage. The risk of it shutting off was random, there was no way to predict when or even if it would shut off on me again. They had to replace the sensor and put an updated harness on.

might be ur ignition, tranny or motor mounts... I had that in my ML, its just that my car shut off in the middle of a hwy!

do a STFF, I remember a w203 memeber had that not THAT long ago, but he has a list of replacements, maybe that would help

I hope you tried to start it in "P". When you tried to start it did it just turn over until it timed out? If so, my guess is CPS, high failure item that gives the symptoms you had.

I just had the dealer add that bracket to the purge valve for $21.50. Problem solved.

i had the same exact thing happend to my 02 c240, dealer replaced cam positioning sensor or camshaft sensor and the problem went away, also try to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, that may reset the computer, it helped me.

when mine went in my w202, my mechanic referred to it as the crank sensor. the sympton simplified: car won't restart warm. I'd be wary of someone "throwing parts" at this problem; you could end up with some great new replacements you didn't need.

the issue with the CPS sensor in the W203 is that its prone to corrosion due to a flaw in the design of the harness. Once it starts to corrode it pretty much has to be replaced and, if you don't replace the harness with a new one in which the problem has been fixed, you will eventually run into the same problem again. This problem was fixed at some point so only cars produced before then should have this issue. I don't know when it was fixed, however.
