Key wont start the car on first try sometimes

I have 2000 Mercedes E320, I have been experiencing a weird thing on it. Every time I try to start the car, it doesn’t start very first time. But when I give it second time it starts, but sometimes I have to try few times. I haven’t changed the batteries in the keyless remote. I will try to change the batteries today. But is there something wrong with it?

Any help will be great.

Thanks

Don't bother changing the batteries. The battery is only used to lock/unlock the doors and open/close the windows. Check the end of the key for damage and the recepticle for dirt.

Does it crank and not start, or not crank. if it does'nt crank, could be the starter, starter relay, ignition switch, key and so on and on. If it cranks and doesnt fire, could be loss of fuel pressure to injectors when sitting, fuel pump, and so on and on, probably better take it in before it does'nt start at all one day.. sorry, but the possibilities are numorous. JimPurdy is right about the batteries. the fob will work the ignition even w/out batteries in it.

I had a similar problem with my 98 E240.

Intermittently, it would not start but would would crank for 10 secs or so. Then, try again and it would start. The problem went away for a few days, returned, then went away, and then the car wouldn't start at all one day.

It turned out that my fault was a failure of an electronic fuel relay switch. The local service guy I use said it didn't come up in the diagnostics, and it took them 3 days to track it down (well, I'm sure it didn't take that long, but it wasn't obiouvs things like starter motor, etc., ).

The part was only €64 to get replaced so wasn't expensive either. Take the car in before it lets you down and you need it towed someplace.

How about the CPS - Crank Position Sensor.

the 2000s have the Smartkey. There can be a few problems with the car.

1. The key is not recognized by the key reader.
You can tell if this is the case if you don't hear a "buzz" from the steering wheel (there's a steering wheel lock that releases) when you first insert the key.

2. The starter is having problems.
If you always hear the buzz when you insert the key, but when you turn it, it doesn't start. If the starter is having problems, it can be a number of things, ranging from the computer, security system, to the mechanical starter.

I have exactly same fault with my 98 E320, changed pump, filter, CPS - can you tell me where this relay is situated, as I too get no faults on diagnostics

Many thanks

Mine sometimes doesn't start on the first try if I am quick about putting the key in and turning it to crank the car. It is almost as if I beat the computer and try to crank the car before it recognizes the key. If I put the key in, and turn it on after a second, it seems to work fine for me.

I had the same problem with my 2001 E430. Sometimes I would turn the key and nothing happened. It turned out to be the starter. Mine was covered by the warranty.
