Somebody told me that at 90K I should have the transmission serviced for my '98 E430. He said that if I don;t get it serviced, it's more than likely that my transmission won't make it to 130K (I currently have 93K on it). Then I talked to a Mercedes service rep that told me that that was a load of cr@p!!! He said my transmission is an electronic transmission and does noe need to get serviced. What do you guys think? I'd appreciated any input.

even though the transmission is a "sealed" unit, the trans. fluid can and should be changed.
Mercedes claims its a lifetime fluid, but at 90k miles its time for fresh fluid.

yea man its a bunch of Sh**, those transmissions are sealed. i have a 1997 e420 with 100,000 and the tranny runs like it's new. those will last a while.

Officially, the transmission is "sealed for life". In servcie, many folks have experienced problems. The problems come from graphite, which is a by-product of normal wear in the clutch packs. The graphite can build up and screw up the electonics inside the transmission. Cars that spend a lot of time on the highway have less problems than ones that spend a lot of time in traffic. A general rule of thumb is that the term "life" means 100,000 miles. Personally, I would have the dealer change the fluid. If he won't, find another dealer that will.

I change transmission fluid every 60K miles... Just to be safe

I can tell you that two master mechanics with around 60 years of combined experience urged that it be done at around 80k miles. 3 or 4 hundred now or 6 grand later on a W210. The choice is yours.
