Angry e420 vs. e430

i always thought that both cars would be performing the same since they both have 275 hp and 300 trq, but i read that the e420 0-60 is 6.7, and the e430 is 6.2, and i was wondering why? is it because the e430 has a flatter torque curve, cause thats what i heard, but then does that mean that the e420 unleashes its power around higher rpms?

Are you sure gearing is the same?

im not sure about the gearing, all i know is that both cars have the same outputs, but i guess the 430 has a lower torque curve which helps for 0-60, but then since the 420 has a higher torque curve, i wonder if its faster at higher speeds.

In the 1998 Mercedes-Benz press kit, a 1997 E420 was compared against a 1998 E430. The 430 had a faster 0-60 and better fuel economy with the exact same transmission and rear axle ratios. Per Mercedes-Benz, the 430 gets 13% better fuel economy. The peak HP and torque numbers are the same for both engines but in looking at the dyno chart, it’s obvious the 430 makes more power over a wide range.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

There were a number of improvements that went into the M113 design (the 430). The M113 has 45% less internal drag than the M119 (420), the engine weighs less, and the intake manifold was artwork.

Here's a write-up on the M113 design

aight that explains it, but what if i put the car in like 2nd gear, where the rpms are in the 4000-5000 range at like 30 mph, wouldnt that help me get better acceleration?

No

That would just mean you're stuck in 2nd gear. Top speed somewhat limited

o ic but it helps when i drop gears, like if im going like 75 on the highway, i put it into 4, which it says is the sport gear in the manual, and the car pickups up faster with it in 4, so maybe starting in a low gear doesnt help, but dropping down to a lower gear does.

correction 1 year

Correction 1 year the E420 is very very rare. It's hard to find an E420 sport I looked a whole year until i found my sweetheart. Check your history the E420 w210 body was made in 1997 only then they switched to E430.

I've driven both (owned one), and there's no significant difference.

275 hp is 275 hp.

The E420 is marginally heavier, and perhaps a bit more timid off the line.

Gearing is the same, horsepower is the same. Weight is almost equal. Just better track times for Mercedes.

Too bad Mercedes never rereleased the E500. AMG did, and it had as much hp as the AMG E55. With .5 liter less displacement.

1998 is the first year for Touch Shift tranny. This from MBUSA.com:

"Transmission Driver-adaptive electronic 5-speed automatic. Touch shift allows driver to manually downshift and allow upshifts by nudging the shift lever to the left or right from the Drive position. Display in instrument cluster indicates selected gear range. Driver-selectable winter mode starts vehicle moving in 2nd gear or a special second Reverse gear to help improve take-off on slippery surfaces."

Also the torque on both E420/E430 is 295 lb-ft.

1998 is also first year for the infared key.
