Post 2000 S500 vs. 2003 E500 (S class race against E class)

ok this is wats up fellow S Class drivers. my friend has recently purchased an E500 and says he will beat my s500. which is probalby true he will UNLESS, all the expert s class drivers here can give me some tips. i have raced a little before buy not in my s class. This race is for the Pride in our S classes. Id appreciate if anyone has any information or tips to help the performance a little bit. I have heard of things like resetting the throttle or something thats connected to the ecu by like turning the igniton on and pressing the accelorater down to the floor for 5 secs then release and leave key in off postion for 2 mins.

My advantages so far are well he has no racing experience
and this is his first mercedes so he knows very minimal about it. hes probably not very good with shiftronic.

also if anyone has any info how to tweak the ecu chip that would be great

im thinking about adding a renntek package soon but im not sure if its even worth it.

Id appreciate any advice what so ever. as long as we can dominate. WE HAVE TO WIN!!! especially so i can shut his mouth once and for all.

Thumbs down

Sorry man, I don't get it!
What are you trying to proof???? Why messing around in the controls of your beautiful sedan, and risk anything?
You have the S-Class and that's it. Smooth and quiet ride, top technology, luxurious interior, ............

Though I have not done this, it seems harmless enough:

1. Turn the ignition key to the on (not start) position.

2. Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold for five seconds.

3. Turn the key to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

4. Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.

This re-sets the adaptive transmission programming ECU to it's default setting. If most of your driving is sedate and normal (like most people) your ECU has adated your programing to your style. The reset will remove that from memory.

The guys on the E55 forum swear by this method.

Do a forum search for "Adaptive transmission reset"

Also, remember that all things being equall you are penalized with a 200 lb weight dis advantage to the E. You might overcome some of that by taking everything out of your car including the spare, jack, tools and any junk you normally haul around. Last but not least, run your gas tank down to about 1/4 full.

All of the above should even the scales some.

Be carefull.

The E will beat you period. Both have about equal performance but consider the weight difference. Tell him to fill up with gas but you make the run on empty, remove spare tire, jack and anything that adds weight. Dont forget your camera, we want to see this. Good luck.

The "ECU reset" (BTW, I don't like to use that term to refer to the procedure as it actually does NOT reset the ECU in my opinion, but rather trick it to believe that you are driving aggressively, therefore the ECU will provide you will optimal shift points and throttle response) does little. I have done it numerous times and sometimes, you will feel a difference, but nothing that will win you races.

The S-class is extremely easy to drive in a straight line. Unlike high powered AMGs, we don't have traction issues. But I can give you these tips:

If accelerating from a standstill -
1. Turn ESP off and leave the shifter in Drive (also make sure you're in S or Summer/Sport mode).
2. Apply the brake with your left foot firmly
3. Lightly and gradually apply the gas with your right foot just a bit (or until the RPM holds at around 2000 rpms). This is called brake torquing.
4. BE SURE to never brake torque for too long (like holding the car like this for more than 20 seconds). This will heat up your torque converter and that is bad. I wouldn't know why you would want to brake torque for that long anyways. It usually takes about 2-3 seconds.
5. Drop the brake and punch the gas quickly.
6. If executed right, the car will chirp the rear tires, the ESP will flash for a few moments and you're off.

If accelerating from a roll (in motion) -
1. Leave ESP on (or off, it doesn't matter).
2. MANUALLY select a gear that will run the engine up to more than 3000 rpms, but no more than 4500 rpms. For example, if racing from a 20 mph roll, use first gear (first gear is strong). From 40 mph, second gear. 60 mph, 3rd. Punch it from that gear and manually go through the gears. BE SURE to watch your tach, and shift BEFORE it reaches redline (Our motors don't make optimal power at redline anyways, but it the gas is floored, the motor will run to redline).
3. After the race is over, shift her back into Drive.

And Ken is right, you have a slim chance. The E is a few hundred pounds lighter. But worth a try. Don't throw money into this one.

You can also check all your fluids, clean or change your airfilters to ensure unrestricted air flow, check tire pressure and when your are ready to race, warm your car and tires up well. It may not make that much of a difference but you'll get better results. Good luck and keep us (me) posted. I like pushing my S to it's limit.

I know I'm only 14 and all that, but I have watched races and know pretty much what I am talking about. I have been in a few races in an s500 myself (I'm not driving ofcourse). Believe me. The torque on an s class is strong. You should reset the adt (adaptive transmition), but don't take that chance. Before the race run your s class aggressivly around the freeway at half tank. Your adt would be set. Make sure you are in sport. Also mut your suspension at sport 2 mode. It puts the tires more firmly on the ground to give off a better push. When the race starts get a little momentum before flooring the accelerator. Good Luck! S class rules! Period.

yo newton thanx for your advice. the gear shifts points really help. i had no idea our engines were this strongn can first gear really go up to 40? and the guy im racing its his first benz and he thinks he knows everything there is to know about a benz. if u have ever drivin an e class have you noticed that it feels kinda sluggish when you shift into drive?

and

slr n8 thanx for your info too. ill definitly do that.and i agree: S CLASS RULES!!!!!! since im running on comfort tires the michelin mxv4 hes probably got 17 or 18s wat evers stock non an 04 e500. im not sure if the s class will loose traction even if you floor it from a complete stop?
will it?

The ECU tip actually works, tried it out several times on my car after driving in traffic and it was noticeable. As for the sport setting, I recall reading somewhere that for straight-line acceleration, the comfort setting optimized weight distribution. As the other members said, 1/4 tank of gas, no spare, and correct tire pressure will give you a slight edge.

Good luck, have fun, and stay safe!

in step 1 when you say turn to on. do u mean turn to on with the engine cluster lighting up with all the lights on it or to the on position where only the white lights in it come on?

All the Christmas lights light up.

Go ahead and try it, but differences will be minimal.

trying to defy laws of physics ?
e500 with the same engine has a lighter body and better acceleration numbers. s500 is not comparable. why bother comparing apples and oranges ?
but sure go ahead and let us know what happened

your forgetting a major advantage the s class has..traction!! when i floor it ill hold the ground immediately it wont slip. he thinks that by turning off the abs system he will go faster but actually he will loose traction and his wheels will be only burning rubber.

Can't turn off ABS unless you're in dyno mode. If you mean ESP, we all know Mercedes ESP stays on even when its off. The E500 isn't a AMG, it won't kick loose. A little tire chirp and it'll quickly take off.

Not to disappoint you, my money is on the E (unless the driver was half-awake or something and you got a big jump).

Since you have some racing experince and your friend has no experince, might as well race with manual shift mode. You control the transmision. Your friend will probably do the same but shift at the wrong points. Just be a smarter driver.

As long as the pedal is floored, the car will shift right before entering the redline, whether you want it to or not. This doesn't apply to some AMGs and newer Benzes, but it does to these cars.

Unless racing from a roll, never use (semi)manual mode. It's slow.
