Should i buy this merceds benz e190/2.6?

new to the Forums from what i can see these are very reliable cars. I want to get one of these for my first car this will be my college car so i need it to get top gas mileage and be reliable . Are they pretty easy and cheap to work on? Whats the MPG like? I found one on craigslist for 1200 bux. here is the posters description:
EXCELLENT opportunity for old Mercedes enthusiast or someone who likes to tinker on German cars.

We have too many cars and I am ready to part with my 1989 Black Mercedes Benz, which I have owned for about 10 years, but have not driven for the past 2 years. The car has been in dry/clean storage for the past two years, so it definitely needs some TLC. However, it does clean up nice and when it runs, it runs very well. We want newer cars and do not work on cars, nor want to spend money to fix it up.

DETAILS:

1989 E-190/ 2.6 L
Automatic
Gasoline (Not diesel)
168,207 miles
Black, automatic
Sunroof
Power windows & seats (driver's seat motor needs to be fixed)
JVC CD stereo/speakers installed in 2000,
Gray Mercedes 'leather' interior is in very good condition
Woodgrain details
Two tone black/dark gray exterior in good condition
(aside from dented passenger door, broken taillight & faded spot on hood)

Alternator replaced in 2000
Not driven much since brakes/rotors/pads, Goodyear tires and exhaust were replaced.

We know it needs a new battery, as the current one needed to be jumped. It starts, but stalls.

A GREAT FIXER UPPER.

here are some pics: http://images.craigslist.org/3n83k13...b18a1d18d6.jpg

is this a steal or a nightmare waiting to happen. Please help me guys.
Also the fact that this car might not have a driver and passenger airbag is disturbing does anyone know if this car has airbags.

thanks!

I have that exact car except w/the factory radio that I am restoring. I ordered a ton of parts today and I'm going to spend the rest of the summer restoring it with a friend who is mechanic. I love my car! I would jump at this opportunity. This one sounds like it's in slightly better shape than mine. The motor/switch on the driver's side is easy and cheap to do yourself.

nightmare. Much better ones can be found for 1200. Stalling issues can sometimes never end as Drew has experienced

Picked mine up for $375 and had to put a used tranny in it so I'm now at $900 and it is pretty darn straight with new tires, no rust and runs very well.

Yes the car should have driver's airbag and ABS, mine does.

Not running for 2 years might lead you into problems you dont want to deal with.. I would try to go for less than a grand...otherwise, probably not worth it. I wouldnt be too anxious to make a deal, its probably not gonna go anywhere fast thanks to all the immediate issues and the ones that could follow from being neglected

I thought Drew has resolved his stalling issues? I haven't been to benzworld in a while.
