Mechanic rip off
So lets get the formalities out of the way..
1991 190e 2.3 8v 5speed 199,192 miles. Car runs a little warm, crunch noise on start up (like a walnut is being crushed in the engine bay), and sluggish after a shift, the exact opposite of a clutch slipping, but the same effect. The rpms DROP and it doesn't want to move for a few seconds, then it rockets off like a warp drive. I took it to the shop, they said compression was down 15% on all 4. 6,000$+ for a rebuild. I laughed and walked away. I narrowed the issue down to the timing chain jumping a tooth. New timing chain and tensioner, quoted $1,200, timing chain, tensioner, and rails, 3,700$. Car starts, and runs fine other then those issues above. So I have decided I will be doing this job myself. What parts and special tools are required to do said job?
