Air Flow Meter Height Problems

I have a 1991 8v 2.3 190e in Mint Condition (50k miles)
To solve a minor cold running flat spot, I adjusted the resting height of the Air Flow Plate.
At rest it was sitting 2mm's above the recommended level (in line with the widest part of venturi).
I was very careful and precise with the adjustment as I read if you knock the pin in too far that adjusts the plates height, then you must to take the whole unit off to tap the pin back up.
Problem is now that I aligned the plate as per the manual, my 190e is starting worse (5 secs to start) and then runs rough for 10-15 secs before smoothing out.
Driveability after the first 10 secs is fine.
It is as if the car is starved for fuel.
Have I done anything wrong ???
One thing I noticed is that at rest the air flow plate had about 1mm of free play downwards prior to adjustment, it now has none. No idea why this changed, but I think this might be my problem but am unaware on how to adjust this.

Any Bosch fuel injection experts got an idea ?

thanks

Doug
