2001 BMW 740iL
190e 2.3-16V Cosworth
Hey Guys,
I'm new here, but i just moved to a new place and i noticed a 190e cosworth that looks like its been sitting for a long time parked in a driveway down the street from me.
It hasnt been registed since 2012 in california, so its possible it hasnt been driven since 2010 because california is a 2 year registration.
My question is, assuming it doesnt run, what is it worth? Black on black, not sure of the year, manual. Paint is super sun faded.
Also im BMW guy, so im not exactly sure whats common on these cars, and where should i start if i wanted to get it running, assuming nothing major is wrong. Also an estimated cost for parts?
Thanks,
Brandon

Really impossible to give an estimate without mileage, operational issues and service/repair issues.
From the picture it's a US trim 86 or 87 (3rd tail light give it away).
Assuming the worst and that it's a "parts car" then the bodykit is easily worth $600-$1K if in good condition. If it still has the front tow hook cover, even beter. The other 16 valve unique parts (differential, steering box, center console, sport seats, fuel tank and seatbelts could be another $500. The engine and transmission are the big questions.
Putting it back on the road could be as easy as new tires, battery and a oil, coolant, lubrication and fuel system flush, about $300 . . . or way more if the suspension rubber or hydraulics are shot or the powertrain was not maintained resulting in some burnt exhaust valves or worse.

I'd say 2 to 3k depending on what you can find out about why it isn't running.

Woah I just joined the forum because I was literally about to ask the exact same question!
I found a 1986 Cosworth near me, which hasn't been registered since 2011, and has been sitting for seven years. The paint is also extremely faded, it's a manual, and I don't know that much about them because I'm an e30 guy XD
Funny how things work like that. So without trying to derail the thread, what are the first things we should check or replace once we get the car? I plan to do a full fluids change and drop a new battery in, but are there any problem areas to be aware of? I heard the timing chains on the 2.3's are weak, and prone to snapping.
