Yes, but it won't run. First, twin cam . . different timing chains, different bore & stroke on the pistions, different water pump, different oil pump, different ECU, different radiator . . . you get the picture.

So...I have to have the whole engine and the rest of the stuff you mention? If that´s all then I am happy.

What year 2.3L would it be going into? If it was built before mid-85, then you'll need to double up your fuel pumps. I assume you'll be putting in the Getrag 5-speed, so if the car is presently automatic, plan on getting the pedal assembly and clutch resevoir. I'm not certain, but the driveshaft on the 16v might be different sized. The klima system is specific to the 16 valve as well. Obviously, it would be easier if there were a donor car available.

I think it will be much easier for me to shop a MB 500sec and stop thinking about changing my little tiny car...

With any project, you have to determine if the end result justifies the time ane expense, otherwise it's just an exercise. For instance, in doing an engine swap and given the time and expense in completing it, wouldn't it be nice if the horsepower and torque gains made it worthwhile? So for less time and money, would turbocharging the M102 get you the same result? Transplanting a more potent engine, such as a small V-8, or a Toyota/Nissan turbocharged rwd engine, might get you more power and "exclusivity" for the same effort.

Crazy idea

Don't even think about doing it!
There's an '85 190E 2.3-16 with a dismantled & allegedly complete engine for sale on ebay.co.uk. The starting bid is GBP500.

If you have the mechanical skill to contemplate the conversion you're thinking about then fixing the ebay car should be a walk in the park. However, if you want a REALLY excellent 190E 2.5-16 then you should buy my '89 Smoke Silver manual with 74,000 documented miles & a full service history!

Hey,

I agree with MTI, you'd need all the components and engine of the 2.3-16v. I think it's a great idea because I am in the midst of having my engine swap to a 2.5-16v from a 2litre. I bought a half-cut from a junk yard, which includes all the components and engine and there shouldn't be any problem. I have a friend who has done the same thing and it works great! Even put the EVO II body kit on as well.

Therefore, shouldn't encounter any problems as long as you have all the parts from the 2.3. The only problem I did encouter was that the radiator couldn't fit as the mountings were higher. SO I've installed back the original radiator and put the oil cooler underneath the radiator (Unless the 2.3-16 has no oil cooler)

The 2.3-16 has the oil cooler mounted next to the model specific radiator, which clears the rectangular air cleaner box.

nasscmw . . . if you got the front clip from the 2.5-16, does that mean you didn't get the limited slip differential in the back? That would have been something to keep.

MTI, yeap that's right. I didn't get the LSD from the back as the junk yard claims that they don't have it. BUT will source for it once I get the engine installed and running.

Other things I AM trying to do as well is get the hydraulics back suspension and a manual gear box. Currently an auto (BORING!!). But like I said, till it's in running condition.

yeah nice idea about the swapping.
but like MTI said, you would need to change virtually every part of the driveline + building over the computer, etc.
it would idd be easy if there was a donor car.
Nasscmw, great hearing of someone who's actually doing this, good luck m8.
I do have one question: how much $$$ would be needed to complete such a project properly: wich means engine, getrag, lsd, driveshaft, but also suspension lowering, maybe brakes(?), etc...?

cya,

matteus
